Let me share with you some history of Lake El Salto. It is a large, clear water lake that is surrounded by beautiful mountains. The lake spans approximately 27,000 acres and is about 20 miles from the coast and 550 feet above sea level. It is 140 feet at its deepest point. Lake El Salto was dammed in 1986 and was filled with Florida-strain Largemouth Bass. Because of the year-round warm water, the catch-and-release program that is implemented and the abundance of shad and tilapia, very large and aggressive bass are caught. The lake record is an 18-pound bass caught in 2002, but catches ranging from 8 to 16 pounds are very common!
     
Western Outdoors Magazine gave Lake El Salto the honorary title "Mexico's Bass Mecca." Bassmaster Magazine called El Salto "the absolute best trophy lake in the world." The rainy months are July, August and September. The preferred time to come for the best, enjoyable fishing weather is from October to June.

I remember my first experience to El Salto Lake. It was in the winter of 1999. My father surprised me with a trip he planned for me and some of his friends. We would fish in WARM SUNNY MEXICO; a welcomed escape from the cold, wintry doldrums that we were encountering at the time. I cannot tell you how excited I was about this new and different adventure I was about to embark on. It was in the dark early evening hours that we arrived to El Salto. The FUN had already started on the ride from the Mazatlan airport to the lake. Actually it started at the airport in Dallas! Everything that you will experience is based on having a GREAT TIME and catching BIG BASS!

A typical day on the lake starts with fresh-squeezed juice and coffee delivered to your air-conditioned room. Breakfast is served in the open-air café, and then you are hooked-up with your local guide and boat for a day on the lake. Seeing the sunrise, after catching big aggressive bass on early morning top-water action, is just the beginning of your fishing experience. You will see some interesting landmarks; a monument on top of a huge rock in the middle of the lake, you will catch fish on top of old houses that used to be in the
valley before they dammed the Elota river that formed the lake. The amazement just goes on and on! Around 11 a.m. you return to the lodge for lunch, fish talk and "siesta." If you prefer, you can fish all day with a prepared sack lunch. The boat is equipped with a cooler full of beer and drinks. About 2 p.m., it's back to fishing, till just before dark. Returning to the lodge you are served Margaritas and beer. An excellent dinner of saltwater or fresh fish, shrimp, steaks, etc. is served and then, the "lie swapping" begins!
